A brand new NRL touch footy comp will tip off at 1300 Smiles Stadium this weekend. The new comp will feature six elite touch football teams aligned with NRL clubs to play games as curtain-raisers to NRL games.
Three NRL clubs from New South Wales, and three clubs from Queensland, will have teams: the Parramatta Eels, Wests Tigers, Newcastle Knights, Gold Coast Titans, Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys. This weekend Townsville will host both the men’s and women’s Cowboys sides taking on the Titans.
Touch Football Australia CEO Steve Mitchell is excited about having a Cowboys team in the mix. “We already have an elite touch Queensland Cowboys club in our Elite 8 touch football series, and they’re the strongest team in the men’s competition – they’ve won the tournament three years in a row.
“A lot of exceptionally strong touch footy talent comes out of North Queensland, including former NRL Cowboys, Matt Bowen and Scott Prince, who both credit their touch backgrounds for the talent they took into rugby league. And Cowboys head coach Paul Green played touch for the Australia school boys team.
The touch games will be broadcast nationally, as a mix of live and delayed broadcasts.
1300 Smiles Stadium gate open at 3pm on Saturday.
