Young Woman Dies From Meningococcal

A woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, has died after contracting the W-strain of meningococcal disease.

She's the fifth person to die from that strain in a year that's seen 40 people contract some form of meningococcal.

The Australian Medical Association warns we could see more cases of meningococcal this year, with Spring and early Summer the peak seasons for infections.

There is a free vaccination program in WA for 15 to 19 year olds against the ACWY strains, while babies can get subsidised vaccinations for the C strain.
